Thursday morning, Jussie Smollett willingly surrender to the Chicago Police Department after found guilty for orchestrating his own hate crime. The “Empire” actor pulled the stunt because he was unhappy with his salary paid during the show. Smollett then hire the Osundairo who also worked in the set of “Empire” to help him hoax the racist hate crime, blaming the crime on Trump supporters. The brothers were paid with a personal check for the amount of $4,000.
The Chicago Chief of Police Eddie Johnson held a press conference to talk about the Smollett case and timeline regarding the matter. Superintendent Johnson stated that 48-hours after the crime was reported to Chicago Police, they knew the entire incident was staged but proceed to treat Smollett as a victim since there was not enough evidence to confirm their suspicions.
The Chicago Police used all the technology to their advantage and obtained footage of the specific timeline that led them to the Osundairo brothers who had fled the country to Nigeria only hours after staging the crime. Originally, Smollett refused to give up his phone to detectives, but once he turned it in, it was found that the phone was heavily redacted. Once the information was retracted, Detectives were able to see that Smollett and the Osundairo brothers spoke to each other an hour before the incident, an hour after the incident, and during the time the bothers were in Nigeria. Once the bothers return to Chicago, they were held as suspects, and later worked with police and confessed to the entire thing. The Osundairo’s statement led the investigation to spin where the brothers then went from suspects to witnesses.
Jussie Smollett’s attorneys offered new evidence to postpone the grand jury but that turned out to be false. However, the Osundairo brothers did show up before the grand jury and their testimony, along with the current evidence, was enough for the detectives to conclude that Smollett was no long a victim but the main suspect.
Today, Jussie Smollett is under police custody for fabricating the hate crime story and filing a false police report. However, we are unaware of the current investigation statues that the FBI is conducting on “the hate letter” that Jussie Smollett claims have received through the mail on the set of “Empire.”
Superintendent Johnson is requesting Smollett for an apology to the city for using not only its resources, but for using something so symbolic like a noose knowing what it means to the black community. The Superintendent assures that no homicide resource were taken away due to this incident; He confronted the media by telling them, “You all gave this so much attention that it probably deserves. So when you get the opportunity, the shooting victims and families in this city that are victims of these crimes, give them the same amount of attention. This shouldn’t have gotten the attention that it did, but it did for his celebrity status.”
The President of course weight in with his opinion over Twitter:
“Jussie Smollett- what about MAGA and tens of millions of people you insulted with your racist and dangerous comments? #MAGA”
