With the controversial Green New Deal making headlines after the Democrats took a radical step towards banning over 95% of vehicles, our only option would be the electric bullet train as our main transportation, if unable to purchase an electric car. However, Tuesday during  his first State of the State Address, the newly elected Governor of California Gavin Newsom announced he will change the project for the bullet train and instead make it travel from Merced to Bakerfied not from Sacramento to San Diego, as it was originally planned. Due to high taxation, what started as a project of $33 billion with a down payment of $9.5 billion in 2008, after a decade it skyrocketed to $77 billion. The Federal Government loaned $3.5 billion for the bullet train under terms to be repaid in December of 2022.

Now that the Governor changed the route and said that for the critics who say “it’s a train to nowhere, that’s wrong and offensive,”  President Trump took the opportunity to demand the $3.5 billion to be returned to the Federal Government. “California has been forced to cancel the massive bullet train project after having spent and wasted many billions of dollars. They owe the Federal Government three and a half million dollars,” tweeted the President, “We want that money back now. Whole project is a ‘green’ disaster!”

The Governor of California responded to Trump’s tweet calling his statement “Fake news.” Governor Newsome also said he will not return the money, “This is CA’s money, allocated by Congress for this project. We’re not giving it back.” The Governor insinuating that the President is desperate to collect money for the southern border.

The agreement between the state of California and the Federal Government is to finish the planned bullet train by 2022; Otherwise, the state must repay the Federal Government the $3.5 billion that was loaned by the previous administration if they decided to cancel the project. However, Governor Newsom rather finish “the train to nowhere” instead of returning the money to President Trump.
